Competitors may arrange with the organisational team for a full refund if they need to opt out due to the onset of illness or a positive test. Naturally we have a COVID-19 Information tab here on the website to share any useful considerations pertaining to personal wellness at the competition and as a place to communicate any additional changes to the new health order - if the government re-introduces restrictions such as proof of vaccination, we will update the website and email registered competitiors.

New Competitors - Important Note
While this competition is most definitely open to first-time competitors, it is more of a "side events" competition and doesn't have the standard, more popular events, so you may be better off waiting for the next local competition to be announced. Having said that, if you still want to participate in your first competition here, please read on.
For those of you new to cubing, WELCOME!
We wanted to let you know this event is perfectly fine for cubers of any age and experience. We just ask you know a couple things before coming to compete...
First, please be familiar with the WCA Regulations and WCA Guidelines.
This video will explain most of what any cuber competing for the first time will need to know.
To sign up, head over to the registration tab, click register, and fill out the information it asks for. This will help you get set up the WCA's system and one step closer to your first official solve!
For those interested in more of the B.C cubing community, see Vancouver's own cubing facebook group. A PNW (Pacific Northwest) cubing facebook group also exists.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: Do I use my own cube to compete?
A: YES! You are responsible for having your own puzzle in order to compete. This means bringing your own cube, or arranging to borrow a cube from a friend. For blindfolded events, make sure it has no logos.
Q: What do I do when I walk in?
A: There is NO CHECK-IN. If you registered online, just have fun and hang out with other cubers. We will be calling people up, so just wait for your group to be announced. If you aren't competing in multiblind in the morning, you do not have to show up until after lunch.
Q: How do I find results?
A: All results are posted on the WCA page a few days after the competition finishes. However, for the day of competing, go to WCA Live to find information about current events. This is also where you will find information about 2nd rounds of events. Remember, the results are entered by a human so please be patient if you do not see your results immediately.
Q: Why am I not on the registration list yet?
A: Make sure you pay you entrance fee in order to be placed on the registered list, which will also guarantee you a spot in the competition. If payment may be any issue, or you are not sure if you can attend, use the contact button to talk to us, and see if we can work out another payment strategy, or have you pay on arrival at the compeition. No matter what your situation may be however, please register online. Additionally, registrations are approved manually by a person so please be patient.
Q: Are there age divisions?
A: Nope! All competitors compete together.
Q: And my guests? What will they do?
A: They will cheer you on, be your moral support and help with your photos and filming. Spectators can enter for free, but each competitor is only allowed to bring one guest. Guests are expected to give priority round table seating to cubers, but there will be seats for guests in the hall. All spectators (and competitors) also must remain silent during the blind events in the morning to allow competitors to concentrate.
Q: Can I have fun at this event?
A: Yup! Cubing is great, and we hope you enjoy the competition!
Particularly if you are newer to competing or to judging or need that refresher after being out of competitions for so long, please read the WCA Competition Tutorial before coming to the competition to learn for the first time or simply be reminded as a more experienced competitor about the procedures for both competing and judging.
This is a relatively small competition, and we will need everyone to help out, even for events they're not participating in when reasonable. We will especially need help judging the blindfolded events in the afternoon, and all finals at the end of the day - but if you're not competing in Multi-Blind, then there's no need to show up until after lunch - though if you want to come and help judge that would really be appreciated!
Keeping the venue as tidy as possible will be a great help as well. We have to be out by 7pm, so please help clean up before you leave if possible.
Serving in these essential roles makes for a smooth and excellently run competition for all. Thank You!
Henry Angus Building
2053 Main Mall
The competition will be held in ANGU 254 on the second floor of the building.
Parking information can be found here.
UBC is accessible by many buses and the venue is just a 10 minute walk from the UBC bus loop/exchange. Due to construction and other unforeseen circumstances, buses may be delayed. Please check Translink's alerts and plan your trip accordingly.
There are many restaurants within walking distance from the venue.
Any changes to the information below will be noted on this page and sent to registered competitors via email
Please note that, as per UBC rules, masks will be required during the competition. We will not be seeking proof of vaccination status of any registered competitor or guest in the venue at this time.
Any competitor or guest who has had a recent positive COVID-19 test or is experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 such as cough, fever, shortness of breath, nausea, etc. should NOT attend this competition. If you need to cancel your registration due to the onset of any COVID-19 symptoms and/or testing positive for COVID-19 (cough, fever, chills, nausea, etc) even on the weekend of the competition, let us, your organisers, know and we will arrange a FULL refund for you.
When not competing, competitors and spectators can show consideration to others by whenever possible maintaining a 3 ft distance from others.
You are encouraged not to frequently swap and share puzzles with other competitors.
Hand sanitizer and disinfection wipes will be widely available for use at the competitor's pleasure.
The competition will be using a fixed seating system when feasible (depending on group size and judge availability), rather than a standard waiting area. This means when competing, competitors will complete all attempts in one sitting with the same judge, instead of being called to a different station for each attempt.
The organisational team will be overseeing procedures that relate to cleanliness, such as utilising sanitizer at intervals and wiping down solving stations at points throughout the day.
Note that the above healthy practices are guided by the WCA which maintains a temporary guidelines webpage.
You can find a full summary of the newer (as of May 2021) WCA regulations here.
Two that we wish to highlight for this competition are:
1) The competitor must have no physical contact with the puzzle cover while starting the attempt on Blindfolded events.
2) Require the competitor to finish signing (not just for the judge to finish signing) before the competitor may reset the timer.
Within the pandemic, the WCA advised the following as part of their Temporary Regulations. We have found these to be sensible practices going forward and as such will be encouraging these during this competition:
1) We will use fixed seating (competitiors stay seated for all solves in an round) when possible (depending on group size and judge availability), and otherwise will use a waiting area (competitiors return here between each attempt).
2) Competitors should refrain from touching the surface of the solving station when they are not in the process of an official attempt.
3) Judges should refrain from touching the puzzle at all times.
4) Judges will ask the competitor to prepare the timer for each attempt (turning on/off, resetting as necessary).
5) After finishing an attempt, if there are more attempts to be done, the competitor must place the puzzle inside the cover.
6) Each competitor is encouraged to bring a pen of their own, for judging and signing.
You can find the rest of the WCA temporary regulations here.
This competition will be sponsored by TheCubicle, who will be providing gift-card prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in 3x3 Blindfolfed and 1st place in every other event. If you haven't checked out their store already, I highly recommend you do! To be redirected to their site, either click HERE or the logo below.
If you reach the time limit during your solve, the judge will stop you and your result will be DNF (see Regulation A1a4).
A cumulative time limit may be enforced (see Regulation A1a2).
The result to beat to proceed to the second phase of a cutoff round (see Regulation 9g).
The format describes how to determine the ranking of competitors based on their results. The list of allowed formats per event is described in Regulation 9b. See Regulation 9f for a description of each format.
